You have to be mentally, emotionally and physically fit so you won’t be drowned from the difficulties that you will encounter. Mentally, because dentistry is a course where a lot of analyzation is required, you don’t have to know things word by word but you have to read between the lines for a better understanding. Physically, because you have to prepare yourself for different task that takes a lot of responsibility especially in completing requirements. There are times where you have to sleep late at night to study or finish something or waking up early for the same reason. You have to learn multitasking but give yourself a time to rest too cause you might just breakdown. Emotionally, for the reason that there are times where you feel so stressed, so pissed off and tired but you have to work for it cause it’s a part of being strong. You must learn how to handle your emotions so you won’t feel weak and to avoid the feeling of giving up. And the last is never forget to pray and thank the Lord for the blessings and struggles that you encountered and made you stronger.
After all these challenges from graduating dentistry there is another challenge waiting for you and that is putting up your career. There are many options that are waiting ahead of you, all you have to do is to pick the best where you know you can excel the most. Many want to build a private practice but it takes a lot of money and time to build a good reputation for putting your name as one of the best in your town. Some options may be, in public health service, military service, teaching, graduate study and research.
You may serve the public by doing some charity works and working in government hospitals or in a non profit organization. You may also involve yourself in military services, specially for men. You may join Air Force, Army, Navy, Or Philippine National Police, where after training you are awarded as First Lieutenant. It also has many benefits specially after retirement. Some dentists also involve themselves in education where their calling is answered. To be an effective teacher requires extreme dedication and idealism coupled with the vision of progress. Specialization in the field of dentistry is also a good option for the new dentists. Dental practice is a profession where continuous learning is required not just for the benefit of the dentist but also for the people he serves. Research may also be an option for the new graduates. Discovery of new techniques or inventing a device that would help in preventing oral problems is a good way to put up your career. These are just some of the options that you may want to take.
These are just guidelines for you to know how to be an effective dentist not by just simply doing your job but by doing it with responsibility and dedication. Remember that the professional criterion for success is not money but service.
“The value of life lies not in the length of days, but in the use we make of them: a man may live long, yet get little form of life. Whether you find satisfaction in life depends not on your tale of years, but on your will. ”
